The Town of Star Prairie participated in St. Croix County’s Citizen Groundwater Monitoring Program (CGMP), contributing five years’ worth of groundwater data to their research.
According to St. Croix County:
The CGMP has been instrumental in uncovering essential information about the origins of groundwater nitrate contamination in St. Croix County. The comprehensive data collected has highlighted that the primary source of groundwater nitrate is linked to agricultural activities, primarily concentrated in the central region of the county.
Leveraging the extensive water quality data, county staff have successfully identified well types most vulnerable to groundwater contamination, taking into account both upper and lower geology surrounding the well.
To deepen our understanding of all wells in the program, the CGMP study has been extended for at least an additional two years. This extension will enable our staff to conduct trend analysis on participating wells. Through this analysis, we aim to identify areas of the county that are experiencing increases or decreases in nitrate concentration.
This extended, longitudinal approach will provide critical insights into the evolution of individual wells over time, contributing significantly to sustainable groundwater management practices in St. Croix County.
